The question that I receive most often is... Where do I go thrifting?
The answer is obvious…a thrift store.
However, this is not the answer most people expect when asking that question. To tell you the truth it is not about what store you’re going to. There is not a secret thrift store that has all the cool stuff you find on my page. The stuff you see on my page is found through hours of digging, curating, and giving a chance to a lot of items.
When I first began thrifting for this page, I sometimes got items that I thought others would like, often dismissing my own style and inspirations. This job is fun because I get to use my imagination and because I get to pick out what I like.
So sit down with yourself. Gather your notebook and your laptop.
Write down your favorite colors and colors that compliment your skin.
Picture your favorite items from your own closet.
Open up your Depop likes, Instagram Outfits, runway looks, etc that you have saved.
Really find out what you like. This is hard if you’ve never done it before!
Finally,
Open up the holy grail app.
Pinterest.
Pay attention to the specific clothing items. Ask yourself questions like…
What shirt makes this outfit?
What pattern is this?
Does the outfit have a statement piece? Is the whole outfit statement pieces?
But the most important question to ask is,
What pieces do I have in my closet to recreate this outfit?
Making sure you have basic staple pieces has made my life so much easier, trust me on this one.
Whatever pieces you do not have, either make a mental note, make a Pinterest board, or write a note of them. Remember this note as often as you can until you go thrifting.
Whether you believe the Law of Attraction or not. That shit works.
You are going to be drawn to pieces that are either exactly what you’re finding for or pieces similar (give pieces that resemble a chance!!).
Here are a few more ideas that make thrifting a little easier…
- Bring your headphones (helps me enter the zone, where the only thing I think about is fashion)
- Energy. Low energy=Less Brainpower. When I don’t operate at my best potential, I’m not the most creative. Remember your thoughts dictate your reality. There are days when I spend 4+ hours thrifting.
- Be Consistent! Some days are not as good as others. Thats okay, be okay with not finding a “Grail” every time you go thrifting. Its what you do consistent
